Work session accessibility

This video clip is from the Coralville city council work session on August 11, 2026,

Work sessions take place directly after the regular meetings and are also open to the public but instead of being in the main council chambers where the regular meeting has just taken place, the mayor insists that everyone scurry to the East Conference Room which only safely holds twenty people as per fire code.

There were 26 people in the room for this meeting with two more members of the public spilling into the hallway.

The chief of police was among the people present at the meeting but when he was asked about fire code concerns, he stated that he didn’t know.

Members of the public tried unsuccessfully to get the work session moved back into the main council chambers but we were ignored.

Near the end of the video, the mayor scolds members of the public who were trying to help circulate the meeting handout for not paying attention.

This observation is included because when we have inquired about the purpose of the work session being moved to the tiny room, the only justification that has been given is that the smaller room has a screen so that everyone can see the handouts.

This is a puzzling response because 1) council chambers has a much larger screen and 2) we still seem to be fumbling around with handouts in the tiny room 🤷‍♂️
