To Coralville staff, mayor, and council,

We ask that the city of Coralville implement a pilot program for fare free busing.

Coralville was specifically mentioned as an ideal candidate for adopting fare free in the November 18, 2025 New York Times article by Cara Buckley about the successes of the Iowa City fare free program. 

We are situated between two cities, Iowa City and North Liberty, with active fare free bus systems giving us the advantage of learning from the challenges and successes of our peer cities.

In addition to the financial relief that the fare free system would afford to some of Coralville’s most vulnerable residents, the environmental benefits of a robust busing system are undeniable.

When Iowa City adopted a fare free bus system in 2023, carbon dioxide emissions dropped by 778 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Living as we do in a state with terrifyingly high and climbing cancer rates, participating in an effort projected to result in better community health is well worth considering.

Coralville makes a lot of real estate investments but we have room for improvement when it comes to providing deliberate infrastructure addressing quality of life for financially challenged residents.  

Fare free busing would be a big step forward in repairing the trust of residents who are otherwise underrepresented in the financial priorities of our city.
